Articles : Southeast Texas is a region of contrasts and excitemen
Posted by admin on 2010/6/17 23:00:00 (25 reads)

Southeast Texas is a region of contrasts and excitement. Our goals with the SouthEast Texas Hike & Bike Coalition are to make more of these areas open to everyone.

The SouthEast Texas Hike & Bike Coalition is incorporated in the state of Texas and are in the process of applying for non-profit status with the IRS. The SETHBC was organized for the purpose of creating (or supporting the creation of) recreational / alternative transportation trails in SouthEast Texas. We originally started our organization with the goal of converting the abandoned railroad corridor alongside Hwy. 124 from Fannett south to High Island. We thought there was a possibility of reclaiming this (or part) as a hike, bike, wheelchair, bird-watching, etc. trail. We are still interested in this project but found that we needed non-profit status to pursue. Meanwhile, we've gotten involved in other projects north of Beaumont e.g. Hwy. 69, Kountze, etc. Our long-term vision is a "recreational / alternative transportation" trail from High Island to Lufkin. But we want to support any endeavor to promote recreational / alternative transportation trails (urban and/or rural) in this area, as these trails serve communities in many different ways such as:
o Make our community a better place to live by preserving and creating open spaces.
o Encourage physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.
o Create new opportunities for outdoor recreation.
o Strengthen local economies.
o Protect the environment.
o Preserve culturally and historically valuable areas.
o Promote safety both in safe riding habits and safe areas to ride.

Site News : A note from the webgeeks
Posted by admin on 2005/12/10 1:00:00 (946 reads)

This is a development site being used and tested by the web folks of the SETHBC to explore the possibilities that may or may not exists with a community supported website offering realtime member input. In our local community where internet literacy is not such a high priority this is a grand experiment to discover if a bunch of bits and bytes can make us grow and take flight.

Please expect that many parts of the site may be "buggy," might not work as expected, or not work at all.  Take this with a grain of salt knowing that we're doing our best with limited free time to devote to this project to eventually produce a web preseance to benefit us all.

I'm going to get a little controversial here, but, I guess it's my right... If you're the type that would like to lynch County Judge Carl Griffith for building a recreational facility without voter approval, sending Jefferson County into a deficit and causing controversery in Southeast Texas, well, I guess he's no friend of your's and well, that's ok. You may be right.

On the other hand, if you believe that Griffith was trying to bring an entertainment venue into Southeast Texas that rivals and surpasses our neighbors to the west, and believe that he and his advisors and backers had vision for the future of Southeast Texas and acted in good faith with the best information he/they had at the time, well, I guess he's a friend of yours (and mine) and that's ok. You (and I) may be right.

If every inspired idea for change and improvement results in a witch-hunt, and search for scapegoats, there's probably not much of a chance for substantial improvement in our communities.

The writer of this article (Todd Fogal) expresses his own opinions here and I don't speak for the SETHBC.

In that spirit, please report anything you'd like to see improved since, as a registered user, this is your site, supporting your community and goals.  If we don't know it's broke, it won't get fixed.  Please use the message boards for your comments, and suggestions so that your suggestions are read by all the people responsible for future enhancements and to limit the duplication of effort.

Our goal here is to have a lot of people doing a little as often as they can, rather than a few doing it all and eventually getting fustrated burnt out by the overwhehlming task of making a meaningful web presentation.

If this is your first experience with a community driven website we encourage you to participate in the message forums, absorb the flow of conversation. With regular participation in the message boards you will get a sense of our broader purposes that can't be summed up in a mission statement.  You will gain insight into our optimistic outlook of the future and understand why we need YOU so desperately to make this vision a reality.

Your imput is vital, but if you're like a lot of us that are newly discovering the love of cycling it may be hard to understand why our opinions run so deeply.

Reach out to your new friends both here and on the rides. This site is not the total solution for shaping our future.  The real change takes place in the real world, not the virtual world.  Our best intentions here are to provide to you a place to connect with like minded folks in those times when we can't meet in person.  Truely, our's is a club where the rubber meets the road. But the guys and gals that are working doggedly to build this virtual resource offer it as a place to fill the gaps between the times we can't be together.
